Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfonamide antibiotic that limits the growth of bacteria. The trimetoprim works by starving the bacteria for DNA replication. Also Sulfonamides inhibits synthesis of folic acid, which is an important element to DNA synthesis.

What are the side effects of Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim Oral Suspension, 200 mg/40 mg per 5 ml, 473 ml?
Stop giving the medication and seek emergency veterinary medical attention if your pet experiences an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue or face, or hives), unusual bleeding or bruising, or yellow skin or eyes. Other less serious side effects may also occur. Continue to give the medication and talk to your veterinarian if your pet experiences fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, diarrhea, weakness, or increased sensitivity to the sun. Side effects other than those listed may occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to your pet.
What special precautions are there?
Keep away from children and animals. * Can be harmful if used in pregnant or nursing animals. Give plenty of water for your pet to drink. If any unusual side effects occur report them to your Veterinarian.
What to do if overdose?
Contact your nearest emergency animal hospital. Symptoms of overdose may include : nausea, vomiting, appetite decrease, diarrhea, yellowing of the eyes, urine productions decrease, bloody urine, and can end in a coma.
