Itraconazole is classified as a synthetic oral triazole antifungal drug. It can be used to treat skin infections as well as generalized systemic infections. Itraconazole is effective only against fungal or yeast organisms. These fungi are the ones that cause skin infections (dermatophytes) commonly known as "ringworm" and toenail infections. It is also effective for more serious fungal infections, such as blastomycosis and cryptococcosis. They are sold as individual 100 mg capsules.

Itraconazole works by inhibiting the enzymes that make ergosterol, a key component in the fungal cell wall. This causes the fungus to be structurally inadequate so that it leaks and dies.

What special precautions are there?
Keep away from children and animals. *Do not give Itraconazole to pregnant pets. *Use caution when administering this drug to pets with liver disease. Since Itraconazole fights fungal infections, it is very important to finish the course of treatment even if your pet is looking, acting or feeling better. Fungal infections are more resilient than bacterial infections and usually require a longer course of therapy. Failure to complete the entire prescription may increase the risk of a relapse.
